Feature: Project Information, Documentation Links, and Comparative Highlights

Overview

This feature adds a clear, user-facing section (e.g., an "About" or "Welcome" screen) that explains what decentcom is, why it exists, and provides links to documentation and (eventually) binary downloads. It also includes the creation of a GitHub Pages site to serve as a public landing page for information and downloads. It will also refine our internal and external language to emphasize our strengths and the weaknesses of centralized alternatives without naming them directly.

Background

Currently, our documentation and some code comments refer to other services by name (e.g., "Discord alternative"). While helpful for initial framing, we want decentcom to stand on its own merits. We also need a central place in the UI and a public website for users to find further information and resources.

Requirements

  • Create a GitHub Pages landing page at (or via the branch) for a public-facing website.
  • Add an "About decentcom" screen or section accessible from the Setup flow or within the app.
  • Provide links to:
    • Documentation (website/GitHub docs).
    • Source code repository.
    • Placeholder for future downloads (Windows, Linux, macOS).
  • Craft copy that highlights:
    • Pros of decentcom: Identity ownership, no passwords, self-hostable, cryptographically secure.
    • Cons of "other services": Centralized control, data mining, credential storage risks, lack of self-hosting options.
  • Remove all named references to specific competing services (e.g., Discord, Slack, Matrix) from:

    • Code comments and UI strings.

Design

UI Changes

  • A new page in .
  • Link to this page from the initial screen (e.g., "Learn more about decentcom").
  • A responsive, visually appealing landing page for GitHub Pages.

Task List

  • Phase 1: Content Refinement
    • Draft the comparative language for the "About" section and landing page.
    • Systematically replace named references in and with generic terms like "centralized services" or "other platforms".
  • Phase 2: Public Landing Page
    • Design and implement (or branch) for the GitHub Page.
    • Include clear sections for "About", "Why decentcom?", and "Downloads".
  • Phase 3: In-App UI Implementation
    • Create with the new content and links.
    • Update to include a link to the About page.
    • Add a small "About" link in the .

Test List

  • Verify that the "About" page is accessible and displays correctly.
  • Confirm all links on the About page and GitHub Page work (point to correct URLs).
  • Run a recursive grep for "Discord", "Slack", etc., to ensure no named references remain in the codebase.
